Psalm 2 | Heaven's Laughter

Note: This post is part of a series of brief devotional reflections upon the Psalms. Before reading the devotional below, take a moment to open your Bible and read the entirety of Psalm 2:1-12.

"He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision." - Psalm 2:4

It is easy for us to look at the present world and wrongly presume the view of dualism—that heaven and hell are at war and the outcome of that war is not yet sure. This may be the illusion of the earth but it is not the reality of heaven. When all the powers of evil are gathered together against the purposes of God, how does the Almighty respond? When earthly rulers leverage their positions of power and authority against the mission of the Church, what is heaven's reply? Our God does not quiver with fear, nor does he tarry in trepidation; he bellows a holy chuckle at the foolish pride of mortal men. The story of the ages is not dualism, its domination. Our glorious God reigns in certain victory over all the schemes of evil, not only thwarting their efforts but actually turning the things once meant for harm into the very platform for his eternal purposes to be fulfilled in the moments of your everyday life.

Think of it, while the souls of the saints are often cowering in disbelief, the halls of heaven are echoing the triumphant laughter of God. Why do we fear? Why do we worry? Because we forget the laughter of heaven. Our God has never been nervous for a moment. He is not anxiously awaiting the outcome of a wrestling match between heaven and hell; he is perfectly conducting a symphony of glory that will resound throughout eternity. Dear Christian, rest your weary heart upon the certain victory of your Savior-King, and take up once more the sword of the Spirit and the shield of faith as you stand firm through the storms of life. He has called you to be a lighthouse for others, a beacon of the hope he offers to all who come to him through faith in the Son. Peace abides in those who remember the sovereign laughter of heaven.
